Making product barcodes
Barcodes supports EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, UPC-E, Code 128, GS1-128, Code 39, ITF-14, Data Matrix and GS1 DataMatrix. Leave off the check digit and we add it; if you type it and it is wrong, we tell you.
Retail numbers (EAN/UPC) must come from GS1 or your retailer. We draw the barcode; we do not issue numbers.
Download PNG for screens and quick prints, SVG or PDF for packaging. Keep dark bars on a light background.
Which barcode do I need?
For products sold in shops, use EAN-13, or UPC-A in the United States and Canada; EAN-8 and UPC-E are the small-pack versions. For books, use the ISBN barcode. For outer cartons, use ITF-14, and for pallets and labels with batch or expiry data, GS1-128.
For your own stock, asset tags and shipping labels, use Code 128. For tiny parts or a lot of data in a small space, use Data Matrix, or GS1 DataMatrix in healthcare.
Getting the size right
Retail barcodes have a standard size and can be printed smaller or larger only within a set range. Do not cut the height or crop the white margins on either side, and print a proof at full size before ordering packaging.
- Static vs editable QR codes
- Change where a printed code goes
- Reading scan statistics
- Send scans to different links (rules and A/B tests)
